Chandler Bigelow II
Surrounded by family, Chandler Bigelow II died on May 4 at his Sagaponack home following a long illness. Lovingly known as “Chan,” he was 72.
A graduate of Milton Academy, Mr. Bigelow went on to study at Trinity College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1959. As a young man he became a skilled sailor and was a crew member of Merry Maiden, the 1958 Class B winner of the Bermuda Race. Friends and family said last week that Mr. Bigelow enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of sailing, skiing and nature with them. Whether sailing his sunfish on Mecox, kayaking off Northwest Harbor or walking his dogs on Sagg Main Beach, he spent many hours exploring the beauty of the East End.
After retiring from a long career in commercial real estate, Mr. Bigelow pursued his main interests—always second to family—in painting, particularly varied Long Island landscapes, and ornithology. In addition, he founded a cancer support group at Joshua’s Place in Southampton. He contributed tirelessly within the cancer community through this group and through his involvement with Fighting Chance, Sag Harbor.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret “PJ” Jane of Sagaponack; two sons, Chandler Bigelow III and his wife Elizabeth of Illinois and Bolan Bigelow of Maine; two daughters, Vanessa Bigelow and her husband James Roy, and Lindsay Bigelow, both of Vermont; four grandchildren, Eddy Bigelow, Walker Bigelow, Penrose Bigelow and Travis Roy; and three brothers, Nelson Bigelow, Alfred Bigelow and John Bigelow.
As per Mr. Bigelow’s wishes, no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
