EAST HAMPTON VILLAGE — East Hampton Town Police arrested Matthew P. Kopoulos, 33, and charged him with felony grand larceny in the third degree, a crime in which the value of stolen property exceeds $3,000, on the afternoon of December 2. The arrest of Kopoulos, who is described by police as homeless, but who has previously lived with his family in East Hampton and Wainscot for many years, followed several weeks of investigation. Police said that Kopoulos had stolen several checks from a close family acquaintance and cashed them, one at a time, at the victim’s bank located in East Hampton Village, between July 17 and August 5 of this year. The checks were for $260, $280, $1,200, and $3,600, totaling $5,340. Kopoulos has a prior felony conviction, Suffolk County prosecutor Keith O’Brien said during his arraignment. East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky issued a stay-away order of protection on behalf of the man police say Kopoulos victimized, before ordering him released. While a felony, the charged crime is not eligible for bail to be set.
SPRINGS — East Hampton Town Police arrested a Springs resident, Brayan Dorio Quintanilla Sacoto, 22, and charged him with misdemeanor DWI early Sunday morning. Police were investigating a reported hit-and-run in which a parked car was struck on Harbor View Drive. They said the 2009 Ford Edge police said Quintanilla Sacoto was found driving nearby immediately after the accident matched the description. The first officer to question Quintanilla Sacoto said that he appeared intoxicated and failed roadside sobriety tests, leading to his arrest. At police headquarters, Quintanilla Sacoto consented to take a breath test, which produced a reading of .25, police said, which is over three times a .08 mark that defines intoxication in New York State and over the .18 level that automatically raises the charge to the aggravated DWI level. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, a violation.
