Joan H. Anderson Stone
Joan Hagen Anderson Stone of East Hampton died, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, July 31.
She and her twin sister, Jean, were born at the family homestead on Indian Wells Highway in Amagansett. She was an eleventh generation descendant of William Fithian, a native of Wales who was one of the first settlers to arrive in East Hampton in 1648.
Ms. Stone was known for her wonderful cooking and her famous clam pies. She played all sports in and out of school and especially enjoyed basketball and baseball. She loved being outside and being active.
She was the daughter of Herbert Keith Anderson Sr. and Sybil Rae Fithian Anderson. Ms. Stone had many fond memories of growing up with her 10 siblings in Amagansett. She attended Amagansett School and graduated from East Hampton High School.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, Robert E. Stone Sr., she is survived by four children, Florence Fithian Stone of East Hampton, Robert E. Stone Jr. of East Hampton, Marian Anderson Stone McMahon of Amagansett, and Nancy Gibson Stone Rowan of East Hampton; siblings, Robert B. Anderson Sr. of East Hampton, Ruth McDonald of Florida, her twin, Jean Snow of Massachusetts, and Charlotte Tosh of Canada; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by siblings, Marion Smith of East Rockaway, Herbert K. Anderson Jr. of East Hampton, Constance Anderson who died in infancy, George Anderson of East Hampton, Marjorie McGuire of East Hampton, and Paul Anderson of East Hampton.
A graveside service was held on Friday, August 5, at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton.
