Lawrence “Larry” L. Miller, a resident of East Hampton for 40 years, died on May 10 at Southampton Hospital. He was 67.
Born in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, to Daniel L. Miller and Mildred Cunningham Miller on May 8, 1941, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, based at the Montauk Lifeboat Station. He worked as a mail carrier in Springs for more than 30 years until his retirement.
Mr. Miller was a volunteer with the East Hampton Fire Department for five years and was an active member of Springs Fire Department for 40 years, holding a number of positions, including chief. At its Inspection Dinner held on May 10, the Springs Fire Department honored Mr. Miller with a standing ovation for his combined 45 years of fire service.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton who served as a deacon for a number of years, he was a charter member of the Red Knights New York Chapter XXV, and a member of the American Legion.
According to the family, he knew and loved many people, many of whom he met during his 30 years of postal service: He got to know families and see their children grow up, marry and have children of their own. He was missed greatly when he retired, and was told often that the mail service was never the same.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Linda Lester Miller, he is survived by a son, Jeff Miller of East Hampton; two daughters, Dana Lester of East Hampton and Leslie Labrozzi of Sag Harbor; a brother, Ken Miller of Mississippi; a sister, Sandy Miller of Idaho; five grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Sierra Sue Miller, who died at the age of 11.
Visitation with a firematic service was held on May 14 at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. Funeral services were on May 15 at the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton. Interment followed at Round Swamp Cemetery.
