Manuel J. Cunha Jr.
Manuel J. Cunha Jr. of East Hampton and formerly of Sag Harbor, died in a car accident Saturday, April 9. He was 58.
Born May 29, 1952, to Manuel J. Cunha and Frances Adele Hand (née Field), he was raised in Sag Harbor and attended Pierson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1975.
Mr. Cunha had a great sense of humor and liked to help people. He had recently rescued a little girl’s dog that had fallen through the ice, survivors said.
He is survived by his mother, Frances; son, Christopher G. Cunha of Queens; siblings, Rhonda Cunha of Florida, Cherryl Cunha of Caroga Lake, Sharon Adam, Lauren Schellinger and Anthony Cunha of Sag Harbor; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Filippone, Wayne Gauger, David Schellinger, Kristen Schellinger; great-nephew Salvatore J. Filippone Jr.; and companion, Linda Pazera.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Sag Harbor.
A fundraiser at Pierson High School will take place on Saturday, April 16, from 5 to 7 p.m., to raise money for Mr. Cunha’s family. Memorial donations may also be made to the Sag Harbor Fire Department, P.O. Box 209, Sag Harbor, New York 11963.
