Michael D. Palmer of Westhampton Beach, formerly of Manorville, died on May 3 following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 58.

Born in Levittown, New York, he was one of John and Beatrice Palmer’s five children and he attended Island Trees High School, Nassau Community College and later joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He grew up spending summers in Montauk, where he developed a love for the beach and the ocean. He later moved to Manorville, where he raised his daughters and began a 27-year-career working for UPS.

According to loved ones, he was a well-liked, dedicated employee who worked the Westhampton Beach UPS route for many years. Admired by his colleagues and easily recognized around town for his good looks and shock of silver hair, he touched many lives in the community with his calm demeanor and laid-back attitude.

After settling in Westhampton Beach in 1992, Mr. Palmer could often be found checking the local surf spots along Dune Road from Cupsogue Beach to the inlet. When his dream UPS route became available in Montauk, he took advantage of the opportunity. He became familiar with the well-known surf spots in Montauk and would occasionally drive out on a Saturday morning with friends to enjoy the surf. He also enjoyed spending time with his dog, Cocoa.

According to his son in-law Bob Berger, “He made you take a step back and relax. That was one of Mike’s most endearing qualities. His ability to slow down, live in the moment and spend time with his family was precious.

“Mike especially looked forward to summer when he would spend time with his family at the beach and teach his grandkids to surf. As he fought this battle the last two years with such perseverance, he showed uncommon dignity, strength and courage. Mike’s spirit was ever present and his courage undeniable, living his life to the fullest. In the end, the perfect wave came by and Mike got on. He left his mark in many of us, one that can’t be washed away in the changing tide. He will be missed by all who knew him.”

Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife, Ginny; four daughters, Jennifer Berger and her husband Bob, Shannon, Dru and Taylor; his mother, Beatrice; three brothers, Dennis, Timothy and Kevin; a sister, Susan; and five grandchildren, Megan, Bobby, Ryan, Kai and Michael.

He was predeceased by his father, John.

A wake was held at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on May 8. A funeral service was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Quiogue on May 9; interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the East End Foundation, c/o Roger Feit/In Memory of Michael Palmer, P.O. Box 1746 Montauk, New York 11954 would be appreciated by the family.
