Paul Edward Hill Sr. died on June 14 at Southampton Hospital after a long illness. He was 66.
Born March 25, 1942, in Southampton County, Virginia, to Clinton Smith and Florence E. Hill-Smith, he became a member of the Millneck Baptist Church of Capron, Virginia, at an early age.
He moved to Bridgehampton in 1968 and worked for the McCaffrey Landscape Company of Wainscott for many years. He then started his own landscape business with his daughter, Paulette Hill of East Hampton—who became his caregiver in his time of sickness—working closely by his side. He had a great love for gardening and would spent many hours fishing.
Survivors said this week that Mr. Hill will be remembered fondly by all who knew him for his kindheartedness and his loving smile.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by two sons, Paxton E. Hill, and Paul E. Hill Jr. and his wife Rose, all of Virginia; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by five sisters, Fannie B. Dillard, Mary F. Dillard, Florence V. Smith, Josephine S. Carter and her husband Joseph, and Rose A. Smith and her husband Stanley; seven brothers, Louis M. Dillard, Kenneth L. Smith, Emmett G. Smith, Larry D. Smith, Robert A. Smith, Raymond T. Smith, and Clinton A. Smith and his wife Selina, all living in Virginia; as well as a host of nephews, great-nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, including two devoted friends, John Wyche of Bridgehampton and Cynthia Debroy of East Hampton.
A wake was held on June 14 at Calvary Baptist Church in East Hampton. Funeral services and interment were held in Capron, Virginia, on June 21. Arrangements were under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
