Pacific Surfing Traditions and Water Access of Indigenous Communities

Description:

Introduction and discussion on Hawaiian/Pacific and Indigenous surfing traditions and how these differ from the dominant surf culture we know today. The discussion will also involve the historical removal of indigenous people from coastal areas in the US and efforts to re-introduce water traditions including surfing.

Join Native Like Water, Shinnecock Youth Clubhouse, Blossom Sustainable Development, Surfrider Foundation of Eastern Long Island, Black Girls Surf, Sophia & Kilian, Grain Surfboards and Avenues Studio Hamptons for an inspiring evening including a short film and panel discussion.

The event is open to general audiences, those with a specific interest in promoting and advocating for solidarity in surfing, inclusion in surfing, minority rights and redress, indigenous/native surfing traditions and others would find this event particularly compelling. The event will be most appropriate for those 12 years old and above.
