Publick House Hosts Soft Opening On Thursday Night

The Southampton Publick House hosted a “soft” opening last week at its new location, 62 Jobs Lane in Southampton Village, where The Drivers Seat had operated.

The following day, Friday, the restaurant was open for lunch at 11:30 a.m.—which, according to owner Don Sullivan, will be the case from now on.

At the “soft” opening last Thursday, April 28, customers were able to order only soft drinks. That will continue to be true until Mr. Sullivan finally gets the New York State liquor license for the new location. He said he anticipated receiving that license in the next few days.

He also said the menu is similar to what was offered at the former location on Bowden Square, offering a lot of the Publick House favorites. The Publick House brewery will continue to operate at the Bowden Square location and provide the beer, once the liquor license is in place.

Meanwhile, Ian Duke, co-owner of the Southampton Social Club, verified this week what has long been rumored: that he has plans to move into the Publick House’s former location on Bowden Square to open a high-end Mexican restaurant, to be called Union Cantina.

“We absolutely are!” Mr. Duke said in an email this week. “Lease is now officially signed, and Union Cantina is coming!” He said he is aiming for a Memorial Day opening but would not guarantee that.

The Publick House’s former home was sold in October 2015 to the Woodbury-based DiNoto Group. At the time, Mr. Sullivan said he had considered buying the property himself, but that the asking price was “unrealistic” for him.
