The Long Island Power Authority has issued a warning about a new nationwide utility bill scam.
The scam, which claims that President Obama will pay your utility bills through a new federal program, has not yet hit the East End, according to information provided by LIPA. But anyone who has been contacted should immediately notify local law enforcement officials.
Upon contact—through personal meetings, telephone calls, fliers, social media and text messages—the victim is told that he or she needs to provide his or her social security number and banking information in order to be issued the money to pay their utility bills. Those who share this information are then taken advantage of by the scammer and do not receive funds for their utility bills, according to LIPA.
