As far as house and garden tours go, the Westhampton Garden Club Hampton House Tour is no middling affair.
Not only does the biennial house and garden tour—which will be held on Tuesday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—include seven homes, but the event will also feature artists, painting en plein air at each of the houses on view, and a luncheon at the Westhampton Country Club.
Homes from Quogue, Quiogue and Remsenburg will be included in this year’s self-guided tour.
In Quogue, those on view will include “Zephyros House,” “The Hermitage,” the Wilson House and the Disston-Gatfield House. On Quiogue, two homes on Woodbridge Lane will be included. The Gaudino House in Remsenburg will also be on view.
“Zephyros House,” named for the Greek god of winds, sits on Quogue Street and is a blend of second empire-style architecture married with LEED design. The property also has extensive gardens, a pool, pool house, garage and main house, which will all be on view.
“The Hermitage,” also on Quogue Street, boasts a serpentine-like front hedgerow which mimics the waves of the sea. The Queen Anne-style home has undergone major renovations since a fire damaged much of it in the 1980s.
The Wilson House, on Assups Neck Lane, is one of the 70,000-plus Sears, Roebuck & Co. homes once offered by catalog and constructed up until 1940. The redesigned cottage is flanked by two 80-year-old mulberry trees.
The modern Disston-Gatfield House on Assups Neck Lane, designed by Quogue-based architect Stuart Disston, is modern and energy efficient. Examples of the homeowner’s love of the sea are evident throughout the house.
On Quiogue, there are two properties on Woodbridge Lane. One is the main house, built circa 1880, on the McBride property and the other is a newly constructed guest cottage, built to complement the larger home.
The Gaudino House in Remsenburg is a shingle-style cottage with panoramic water views. The newly constructed home was built to evoke the charm and architecture of the 1920’s era shingled cottages.
Artists Fred Bender, Ellen Postrel, Ray Gomez, Jo-Ann Corretti, Carol Young, Dolores Castrucci and Bernard Springsteel will be painting en plein air at each of the homes. Additionally, refreshments will be served at one of the houses on the tour and a boutique will be set up at another.
Lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westhampton Country Club, for an additional $30 additional. Proceeds from the tour and luncheon benefit the public gardens on the village greens in Westhampton Beach and Quogue, as well as the gardens behind the Quogue Library.
