PSEG Long Island Expands Discounts For Low-Income Ratepayers

author on Oct 2, 2017

PSEG Long Island announced last week that it will further reduce service, energy and meter charges for eligible, low-income customers.

The total effective discounts will be increased to $15 per month for eligible customers without electric heat and $20 per month for eligible customers with electric heat. The discounts were previously about $5 and $10 a month, respectively. Following a unanimous vote by the Long Island Power Authority Board of Trustees, PSEG Long Island implemented the new discounts on Sunday, October 1.

“PSEG Long Island continues to work toward a more affordable energy future for our customers across Long Island and the Rockaways,” said Dan Eichhorn, PSEG Long Island’s incoming president and chief operating officer in a statement. “From implementing clean, renewable energy solutions that will eliminate the need for costly fossil generation, to making the changes necessary for our customers to have a truly balanced bill, month-over-month, to expanding the discount we provide to our most vulnerable customers, PSEG Long Island is delivering on our commitments to improve the level of service our customers receive and to achieve long-term rate stability.”

Additionally, participating customers will have a grace period of four additional months, from the enrollment expiration date, to complete re-enrollment. This will prevent disruptions in any monthly discounts. Previously, customers receiving low-income discounts were required to re-enroll each year to receive a discount on their service, resulting in gaps in low income customers’ program participation, according to PSEG Long Island.

PSEG Long Island also encouraged assistance recipients to enroll in PSEG Long Island’s balanced billing program, which makes customers’ bills consistent and helps them budget for their monthly payment for the entire year.

PSEG Reminds Customers To Call 811 Before Digging

As National Safe Digging Month begins, PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, resulting in repair costs and fines, PSEG stated in an announcement this week. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. The call is free and the mark-out service is free.
