In the late afternoon on Saturday with the famed painter’s light of the Hamptons flooding indoors and out-, 18 interior and landscape designers showcased their ideas at the Watchcase luxury condominium project in Sag Harbor. Proceeds from second annual Holiday House Hamptons, sponsored by Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organization devoted to scientific research, which was founded by Evelyn Lauder in 1993.
Interior designer Iris Danker, a 17-year breast cancer survivor, founded Holiday House in 2008 to fundraise within the interior design field for breast cancer research. Ms. Danker and Christopher Highland were the co-chairs of the event.
This year the showhouse is divided between three residences at Watchcase. Built as a factory in 1881 by Joseph Fahys for watchmaking and later bought by Bulova in 1936 for watchcase manufacturing, the building remains one of the last vestiges of Sag Harbor’s industrial era.
In 1981 the factory was shuttered and the building became a derelict eyesore for more than 30 years. Cape Advisors, the developer of the luxury condominium project, hired architects Beyer, Blinder Belle, known for their preservation and design work on Ellis Island, including the transformation of the main building into the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, to adaptively reuse the structure for luxury condominiums.
New townhouses, each containing several units, have also been constructed around the perimeter of the property and together they form the space for a private, residents’ courtyard with terraces overlooking green space and a swimming pool.
All three units on display for Holiday House Hamptons open to the interior courtyard. The unit in the former factory building is an 1,812-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath affair with 1,395 square feet of terraces. The high ceilings with massive yellow pine beams provide a rhythm and solidity. Tall, double hung windows painted black with low windowsills create an intimate feeling while the divided light windowpanes fill rooms with light and shadows. The brick walls are painted white so the whole place has a rugged, loft-like ambiance.
The living/dining/kitchen area, furnished by James Huniford, exudes a rather masculine presence with a long library table doing double duty for book display and dining and fitting nicely with the architecture of the space. A long hall leads to bedrooms decorated by Campion Platt and Tamara Magel. Mr. Platt’s bedroom and walk–in closet have an exuberance in both color and texture. The round chandelier over the bed, resembling interwoven ribbons of shaved wood, is wonderfully over the top.
Ms. Magel’s bedroom is a repository for delightful objects including an intriguing pair of small-scale marble end tabletops supported on thin metal rods attached to flat metal plate bases. The major terrace to the outside by Milly de Cabrol and Ani Antreasyan, conceived as a European backyard, features a Tuscan potting desk surround by potted olive trees.
The townhouse, on three levels, features 3,509 square feet of rooms and 861 square feet of terraces and gardens by 11 different designers. West Chin designed the ultra-modern open plan space on the main level and Bjornen Design treated the cozy study/bedroom to a marine palette of teal carpet and accessories.
Scott Formby of Formby & Associates gave the lower level rec room the feeling of a cabana/pool lounge room. Kimonos hanging on a rack serve both as decoration and robes for guests walking out to the pool area.
Of note on the second level is a very small bedroom decorated by Elsa Soyars. It has an exceedingly tall ceiling, which can be overwhelming unless something is done to break it up. Ms. Soyars accomplished that by installing a flat, stock piece of gray wooden banding that wraps the room above the windows. Above the banding is beige fabric wallpaper and below it another from Crezana Design, in light brown, that she called embossed Madagascar, which resembles crocodile skin coated with a subtle silver leaf overlay. The night tables feature lamps whose bases are made of white stones jutting one above the next.
This sophisticated room of calming neutral colors has a tactile quality not present in any of the other rooms featured.
Eugenia Au Kim created both the simple entry terrace and the informal dining garden in the bungalow unit of the townhouse. Suggested attire for the gala was white, and she wore white slacks and a white tunic top highlighted with a decorative, gold pattern, which she described as “premeditated casual.”
The showhouse at 15 Church Street in Sag Harbor will be open daily to the public through August 10. Tickets cost $35.
