Roxanne Zimmer, the community horticulture specialist at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, will give a virtual presentation on Wednesday, July 21, on the different tomato flavors and why many tomatoes lost their flavor in the last 30 years.
“Tomatoes are simply a delicious food, my favorite,” Ms. Zimmer said on Friday. “But their chemistry is complex with each type hitting different taste notes. I provide an overview of what accounts for the variety of tastes and invite folks to find what pleases them the most.”
She said tomatoes are a universal favorite for their distinctive taste. “Aroma also contributes to the taste as does the feel of the tomato in our mouths.” she added. “I identify which tomatoes are likely to deliver the taste sensation that they promise. Heirloom tomatoes top most lists. I also discuss why so many tomatoes available to the public today have lost their flavor.”
The presentation will run for about an hour followed by a Q&A.
