When you’re an athlete who wins a world championship, you go to Disney World. Apparently, when you’re an actor who wins an Oscar, you sell your house in the Hamptons.Last year, Julianne Moore, not long after taking home the Best Actress award for “Still Alice,” put her Montauk cottage on the market. The 1,000-square-foot home on 0.69 acres on Fort Pond was listed for $3.5 million.
Liev Schreiber did not specifically win an Academy Award, but he did have a key role as the editor who gets the investigation of pedophile priests rolling at the Boston Globe in “Spotlight,” which was the surprise winner of the Best Picture award at last month’s presentations in Hollywood. He and his wife, actress Naomi Watts, have put their Amagansett manse on the market for $5.85 million.
If you fancy living in a home graced by Oscar, and Ms. Moore’s place is a tad too tiny, the Schreiber-Watts digs in the Amagansett Lanes section could do the trick. On two-thirds of an acre is a 6,100-square-foot house with six bedrooms and 7.5 baths, and of course there is a pool. It’s listed with Sotheby’s.
Unlike some other well-known actors, the couple has not tried to hide their existence in the Hamptons. Among the sightings last summer were the pair chowing down with their two children at La Fondita in Amagansett and the family strolling through Marine Park in Sag Harbor.
Given their schedules, it is a wonder that Mr. Schreiber and Ms. Watts get to spend any time in the Hamptons at all—which could be why they’re selling. The resume of the British-born Ms. Watts (her father was Pink Floyd’s road manager), a two-time Oscar nominee, includes “Mulholland Drive,” the third iteration of “King Kong,” and “St. Vincent,” opposite Bill Murray. She is in the “Divergent” series, which has the first installment of the third film due out this week, and presently she is lensing the new version of “Twin Peaks,” reuniting with the director David Lynch.
Her husband has been no less occupied in front of cameras. Recently, on the big screen he has played Lyndon Johnson in Lee Daniels’s The Butler” and the Russian chess master Boris Spassky in “Pawn Sacrifice.” In addition to his pivotal role in “Spotlight,” what has kicked Mr. Schreiber’s career into a higher gear is the popularity of “Ray Donovan” on Showtime. The series, which also stars Oscar-winner Jon Voight, is set to return for its fourth season this year.
With all these demands, Mr. Schreiber and Ms. Watts figured out a way to see each other more: make a movie together. Due to hit the festival circuit this fall—which could include the Hamptons International Film Festival—is “The Bleeder.” Starring with Ms. Watts are Ron Perlman, Elizabeth Moss, and Jim Gaffigan. Mr. Schreiber plays Chuck Wepner, the heavyweight boxer from New Jersey nicknamed the “Bayonne Bleeder” for the buckets of blood he spewed during his bouts in the 1970s. His most famous fight was in March 1975, when Mr. Wepner lasted into the 15th round against Muhammed Ali before being knocked out. (Reportedly, Mr. Wepner was the model for Rocky Balboa.) In the film, Ali is played by Pooch Hall, who plays Ray Donovan’s half-brother in the Showtime series.
Hopefully, Mr. Schreiber and Ms. Watts won’t have to take a similar beating in selling their Amagansett getaway.
