Grey Gardens—the East Hampton estate that lent its name to a documentary, a HBO narrative film and a stage musical about its residents “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale—has hit the market for the first time since 1979.

Designed by architect Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe and built in 1897, the residence drew national attention in the 1970s for the eccentricity of Big Edie and Little Edie, the aunt and first cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Its name was inspired by the color of the dunes, sea mist and the garden walls made of cement. Under the stewardship—or lack thereof—of the Beale women, the home fell into disrepair. Ms. Kennedy Onassis and her younger sister, Lee Radziwill, stepped in with money to rehabilitate the dilapidated home so the Edies could avoid eviction.

The home and 1.7-acre property were completely renovated and restored to their original condition after Ben Bradlee, the former executive editor of The Washington Post, and his wife, writer Sally Quinn, purchased Grey Gardens in 1979 with the covenant that they not raze the structure. Mr. Bradlee died at the age of 93 in 2014, after which the home was marketed for summer rentals.

Grey Gardens was listed for rent for the summer of 2015 at the rate of $250,000 for Memorial Day through Labor Day, and reportedly fetched as much as $200,000.

The now-pristine home and grounds, with pool and tennis, has 7 bedrooms and 6.5-bathrooms. It’s listed for $19,995,000.

Michael Schultz has the listing for The Corcoran Group.

Hamptons Rental Market Remains Alive and Well

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the demise of the Hamptons summer-rental market are greatly exaggerated. “Any hint that the Hamptons rental market is anything but robust is completely wrong,” said Corcoran associate broker Gary DePersia in East Hampton. An interesting dynamic is stirring in the Hamptons vacation-rental market. Although there has been an unprecedented rise in short-term rentals and the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic linger, it has been a bumper crop year for Wall Street, interest rates have remained steady and a new breed of demanding customer is emerging. Despite it all, the Hamptons vacation-rental market remains as ... 19 Jun 2025 by Joseph Finora
