Jefferson Street In Sag Harbor To Reopen In Six Weeks

Jefferson Street in Sag Harbor Village will be open to vehicles again at the end of April, having been closed since 2011 because of renovations at the John Jermain Memorial Library.

The matter was discussed at a Village Board meeting on Tuesday night. An agreement to keep the road closed expired in December, and Library Director Catherine Creedon this week asked for a six-week extension to keep the library on track to possibly opening on July 4, which would be the best-case scenario.

The road closing has allowed construction vehicles to travel in and out of the property with ease. However, other vehicles have not been able to turn onto Jefferson Street from Main Street.

“We are getting very close to the finish line for the library,” Ms. Creedon said. “It would be beneficial, and I think for the public it would beneficial, in finally getting to the end of the project if we could maintain the situation we have now until the end of April.”

Ultimately, the Village Board agreed, and the road will remain closed until then.

The board also said that if there is still construction work being done at the site at the end of April, a fence must be put up at the edge of the sidewalk on the north side of Jefferson Street.

Ms. Creedon noted that the library has also committed to remediating the sidewalk when the other work is completed.

“We are grateful for the village’s support and really are pushing the project as hard as we can,” said library Board President Nick Gazzolo.
