It’s pretty simple: If you have an even house number, water the lawn on even-numbered days. If you have an odd house number, water on odd days.
As outdoor temperatures rise, the Suffolk County Water Authority is asking residents to voluntarily rejigger watering routing to help the authority maintain water pressure, which is needed for everything from morning showers to fire protection.
Excessive water use occurs most through automatic irrigation systems running between midnight and 7 a.m. Sprinkler systems strain the distribution system, which can lead to high infrastructure costs, and they reduce water pressure. Spreading out their use can help, and many automatic irrigation systems even have a switch to select an odd or even watering routine.
The Water Authority is also encouraging customers in Southampton, East Hampton and Southold towns to join its East End Water Wise Club, which will make them eligible for a credit of as much as $50 to purchase low-flow shower heads, faucets or rain sensors for lawn-watering systems.
More information about the club can be found at scwa.com/eastendwaterclub/, or by calling the Water Authority at 631-292-6100.
