Sagaponack’s zip code—11962—is now the most expensive in the country. With its vast oceanfront estates and dwindling expanses of farmland, the little village is home to many a hedge funder and celebrity, along with longtime farming families.

The median home sales price in this well-heeled village is $5.12 million, according to Property Shark, which calculated home sales that had closed from January 2014 to June 2015 to find the median sales prices for each zip code. Sagaponack now tops Atherton, California, which came in second with a median home sales price of $5.05 million. The Silicon Valley-based town had been the reigning zip code champion for two years running.

However, in the end, California still has 14 of the top 20 most expensive towns in the country, defeating New York, which has only five. Rounding out the list is Miami Beach in Florida, taking ninth place, with a median sale price of $2.65 million.

Once a hamlet of Southampton Town, Sagaponack became an incorporated village in 2005. It has been a destination location for many years and boasts some of the most dramatic estates in the Hamptons—such as billionaire Ira Rennert’s 63-acre compound, which totals more than 110,000 square feet and includes a 29-bedroom main house.
