Alonzo Bellows Abbey
Alonzo Bellows Abbey, known as Lonnie, of Southampton died at his home on February 26. He was 71 years old and a founding member of Fighting Chance, a cancer support group based in Sag Harbor.
Mr. Abbey was married for 25 years to Patricia (nee Cumby) and since 1961 they resided in Southampton. He was self employed as a painter, working under the name of Abbey Painting. He and his wife enjoyed country dancing for many years. An inspirational member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he lived to one-day short of his 39th year as a member.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five sons, Christopher Abbey and his wife Lori of Buffalo, Toney Abbey of Southampton, Thomas Keane and his wife Tricia of Southampton, Jonathan Keane of Southampton, Patrick Keane of Southampton; and two daughters, Kathleen Clark and her husband Sean of Florida and Margaret Mott of Sag Harbor; a sister, Brenda Ettari of Lake George; and a brother, Kerwin “Butch” Abbey and his wife Viola of Hampton Bays; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Betteridge
His family, the Bellows family, dates back many years when the town was known as Good Ground.
Visiting hours were held at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays on Thursday, March 28. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor George Mangan, was held at the Hampton Bays United Methodist Church on March 1 with family members acting as pallbearers.
