Alvin Kappenberg died on February 6, 2020, just shy of his 96th birthday, at home in Westport, Connecticut, and surrounded by family.
Born February 18, 1924, he is remembered by family as creative, curious, and a humorous storyteller who led a full life. As a young man, he joined the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II for six years, serving as a signalman 2nd class on the USS North Carolina battleship in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked in the fur business, following in his father’s footsteps. He then had a long career running his custom home-building business, Janel Homes, and working as the building inspector in Westhampton Beach. He was a Freemason and Rotarian, serving as a district governor, club president, and hosted multiple international students in his home. He also enjoyed his retirement, helping to care for his grandsons in Westport and relaxing at Swordfish Beach Club in Westhampton Beach. He loved to crack a joke, was generous to others, and enjoyed time with his family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Case; and his brothers, William and Herbert. He is survived by his daughters, Muriel Rand and Janet Navon; as well as his five grandchildren, Brad, Catherine, and Jason Rand, and Matthew and Mitchell Navon; and one great-grandson, Weston Rand.
Services will be held at the Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on Sunday, February 16, with visitation from 11 a.m. to noon, with a funeral service at noon.
