Another Solution

If Good Ground Road Extension is the elegant solution being devised to be a relief valve for the Main Street traffic congestion in Hampton Bays, then something here doesn’t smell right [“Town Board Mulls Montauk Highway Bypass in Hampton Bays,” 27east.com, February 26].

My father was one of the Local 40 structural ironworkers who built the steel bridge span of the Sunrise Highway Extension above the Shinnecock Canal. Isn’t it fishy that not a word is mentioned of Sunrise Highway Exit 65 as the main feed into Hampton Bays?

The only cars that would utilize this relief valve would be beachgoers and Good Ground residents. The same exact amount of Sunrise Highway traffic would still crawl through Main Street. As the closed movie theatre will become a CVS, so there will be even more cars soon, right there at Springville Road.

This is not an elegant solution.

What is needed is a common sense solution. Could the key be Exit 66 of the Sunrise Highway, just beyond the canal? It’s just past the giant boondoggle project that destroyed the east side of the Shinnecock Canal on North Shore Road.

Open up Exit 66! Could it be less disruptive and cost less in tax dollars and be a true solution to the problem of second-home owners and the trade parade using Hampton Bays as a shortcut? Exit 66 is too dangerous now.
