Carol H. Willumsen
Carol H. Willumsen of Riverhead, formerly of Southampton, died at Stony Brook University Hospital on Friday, July 27, surrounded by her family. She was 79.
She was born in Southampton on February 22, 1933, to Fredrick G. Willumsen and Dorothy Schwenk Willumsen. She worked in forensic toxicology for the Nassau County Medical Examiners Office, but her true passion was her love of dogs, especially whippets. In the 1960s, under the Willcare name, she began the breeding of whippets and the tradition of dog breeding continues today through her niece, Susan. She was a recognized American Kennel Club licensed judge whose assignments took her far and wide. She was a mentor and a friend to many in the sport of dogs.
In her retirement, she enjoyed many activities including swimming, card games and gathering with friends.
She is survived by six nieces and a nephew, Linda Jones of Water Mill, Susan Willumsen of New Hampshire, Patricia DiBenedetto of Rhode Island, Robin Gibbs of Calverton, Gail Willumsen of Los Angeles, Michelle Willumsen of Los Angeles, and Brien Willumsen of Canada. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Jeanne Willumsen of Southampton and Jacquie Willumsen of Canada. She was predeceased by two brothers, Theodore Willumsen of Canada and Robert L. Willumsen of Southampton.
