A memorial service for Carol Louise Halsey Sherman of Southampton will be held on September 18 at 10 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork in Bridgehampton. Ms. Sherman died on December 23, 2007, at her Southampton home. She was 85.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, to Patience Snedecor Halsey and Donald Post Halsey, she spent her childhood between Montclair and Bridgehampton. After graduating from Montclair High School and attending Greenbriar Junior College, in 1942 she married the man survivors called “the love of her life,” Nathaniel Harris Sherman of Plympton, Massachusetts, and Key West, Florida. After the war, the couple moved to Montclair, where they raised four children.
Throughout her lifetime, she and her husband were active in many political movements and groups such as the United World Federalists, the United Nations, and the Montclair Good Government Democrats; she herself was a firm supporter of women’s independence and rights.
Always an involved Unitarian, she was an active member of the Montclair Unitarian Universalist Church, the Charlottesville [Virginia] Unitarian Church and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork. She and her husband helped to found the Unitarian Fellowship in Waynesboro, Virginia. During her time in Virginia, she also worked as a colorist for Dawbarn Brothers, developing dyes for plastics.
Among her interests were fishing, sailing, and swimming. Survivors recalled that she was a talented artist who specialized in Long Island seascapes and portraits in oil. Upon her husband’s retirement, the couple divided their time between their homes in Florida—one in South Miami and the other in Hollywood—and Southampton.
Survivors recalled that she was a devoted, supportive partner in her marriage and, for her, family always came first. She will be remembered most, they said, for her unfailing support and love.
Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by a son, John Sherman of Water Mill; three daughters, Linda Lee Sherman of Southampton, Patience Halsey-Sherman and Gerald Boyer of New Jersey, and Marian Sherman and Joe Dmuchovsky of Nevada; eight grandchildren; and extended family.
Dispersal of her ashes will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Unitarian Universal Congregation of the South Fork, P.O. Box 1444, Bridgehampton, NY 11932 or the Peconic Land Trust, P.O. Box 1776, Southampton, NY 11969 would be appreciated by the family.
