Former Bridgehampton resident Catharine Baldwin Hoffmann died on May 27 her home in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Known as Pat by many friends, she was 93.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware, she was a graduate of East Orange High School and Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and was a state diving champion in 1932. Survivors said this week that she was a gifted writer whose many published stories and poems delighted generations of readers.
She was also an enthusiastic volunteer for many community organizations, including the Bridgehampton Association, St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridehampton and the Morristown Memorial Hospital, where she served on the board of trustees and as president of the Women’s Association. In addition, she served on the board of trustees of Hood College and was president of the Women’s Club of Orange.
Mrs. Hoffmann lived in East Orange for 45 years before moving to New Vernon, New Jersey. She and her husband later retired to Bridgehampton, where they lived for many years before moving to Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, in 1997.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, John and Nancy Hoffmann of Bridgehampton, New York City and South Carolina, and James and Martha Hoffmann of Massachusetts; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Richard Moore of New Jersey, and Ellen and Michael Wallop of Bridgehampton and Brooklyn; and a brother, Robert H. B. Baldwin of Bridgehampton, New Jersey and Florida.
She is also survived by three grandsons, Hunter Hoffmann and his wife Michelle, William Wallop and Peter Moore and his wife Jennifer; four granddaughters, Chauncey Hoffmann, Elizabeth Moore, Molly Moore and Catharine Osborne and her husband Alan; and three great-grandchildren, William, Grace and Henry Osborne.
Her husband of 59 years, William L. Hoffmann, predeceased her.
Visitation was on May 31 at Bailey Funeral Home in Mendham, New Jersey. A funeral service was held on June 1 at St. Mark’s Church also in Mendham. A local service will be held on June 15, at noon, St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton.
