Charles Frederic Corwith Jr. (Charlie) of Water Mill, NY passed peacefully on October 31, 2025.

He was born on September 18, 1948, in Southampton, to Fred and Bobbie Corwith. He was a lifelong resident of Water Mill and Southampton, graduating from Southampton High School in 1966. He married Dianne Kuettner in 1970, and they raised three sons: Clay, Cliff, and Chris. He later married Susan Davis Marchese in 2007.

He attended Vale Technical Institute from 1967-1968. He then joined the United States Air Force (1968-1972) and was assigned to Shepard AFB, Texas, prior to serving one tour in Vietnam. After returning to the states, he was stationed at Dover AFB in Dover, Delaware and Hill AFB in Ogden, Utah. Charlie left the USAF in 1972 with a rank of Technical Sergeant and joined the NY Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton.

He also worked as a mechanic at Hull Chevrolet and Lester Motors before opening Corwith’s Auto Body in 1978. After 40 years, Charlie retired and his son Cliff took over the business.

Charlie enjoyed watching NASCAR races and sponsored several racing teams over the years, including the #34 of Don Howe and #56 of Jim Corwith. He was very active in the community and organizations. He sponsored a women’s softball team and Little League teams for many years. He was also a member and president of the North Sea Lions Club where he helped organize and run the down hill derby. He was involved in the Water Mill Community Club and the Water Mill Village Improvement Association, where he promoted the annual car show on the green, which benefitted the Corwith Windmill. He was an active long-time member and officer of the Maidstone Gun Club in East Hampton. In 2021, Charlie and Susan moved upstate to Gardiner where he joined local clubs to continue his love of shooting sports.

Charlie was proud to be a veteran and always wore a Vietnam Veteran hat. In April of 2025, Hudson Valley Honor Flight Mission #35 honored Charlie’s dedication to serving his country. He was able to tour the Washington memorials and was shown appreciation for his service with the most important phrase of “Welcome Home!”

He is survived by his wife Susan, her two children Sara (David) Walton and Nick (Sarah) Marchese; his sons Clay, Cliff (Dawn Webb) and Chris (Jennifer); his siblings Susan, Cindy (Danny McKeever), and Jimmy; along with four grandchildren Jordan, Mallory and Addison Corwith, and Jacob Walton.

Tying Cauliflower

For a common vegetable, the cauliflower is high maintenance. It asks a lot — first, a long growing season that resists direct seeding, so it must be transplanted. Cauliflower does not like it hot; it wants plenty of moisture and nutrition. If the farmer can arrange a splash of boron, so much the better. Each cauliflower wants plenty of room and requires dedicated weed control. Finally, when the crop is a field of deep green hues, anchored so firmly in the rich earth, its broad leaves have been satisfied. Down deep within, the desired “fruit” takes shape: The cauliflower forms. ... by Marilee Foster

The Truth About Kratom

As the Mayo Clinic describes it: “Kratom is a supplement that is sold as an energy booster, mood lifter, pain reliever and remedy for the symptoms of quitting opioids, called withdrawal. But the truth about kratom is not so simple. And there are safety problems linked to its use.” The article continues: “Kratom is an herbal extract that comes from the trees of an evergreen tree called Mitragyna speciosa. The tree grows in Southeast Asia.” However, “some kratom sellers add more of the active ingredient than kratom naturally has. … Depending on the amount of active ingredient in the product ... by Karl Grossman

In the Soup

When I was in the throes of perimenopause, I couldn’t eat hot soup. Any soup, no matter how delicious, precipitated a hot flash. Sweaty heat would radiate from my neck to my scalp and then head south. It was a sad time for me. One of my favorite food groups is soup. I wrote an essay about those hot flashes back then; lucky for you, it didn’t appear in these pages. I didn’t have this gig yet, so you were spared from reading what happened in and to my body while I was in the throes of perimenopause. I did ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Useless Durak

In a recent post, Ed Surgan paraphrased an article he claims was from Newsday about the “No Kings” rally: “Demonstrators were concerned with cuts to Medicare, government job cuts and free speech. While the first two may be legitimate differences over policy, they pose no threat to democracy.” Here is an actual quote from Newsday: “Thousands of protesters at more than a dozen locations from Port Washington to East Hampton rallied Saturday to denounce what they view as an increasingly authoritarian regime under the Trump administration. … Dozens of protesters interviewed in Mineola, Port Jefferson and Patchogue voiced concern over ... 3 Nov 2025 by Staff Writer

Turned Away

Perhaps to close out the discussion of the Working Families Party candidates, local voters should be aware of what happened during the primary election earlier this year. I work as a poll official in Westhampton Beach, and we had a total of eight voters come in to cast ballots all day. None of them was a registered Working Families Party voter. And so, although they were well meaning, we had to turn them away, thanking them nonetheless for trying to exercise their right to vote. There were at least 10 poll officials seated all day, from 6 a.m. to 9 ... by Staff Writer

Growing Silent

According to 27east.com, intense rainfall led to “significant scour and erosion” on the west side of the Sunrise Highway bridge abutment over the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays [“Lane Restrictions on Sunrise Highway Will Last at Least Through Next Week,” 27east.com, October 31]. Many commuters are experiencing this firsthand. These kinds of rain events will become more commonplace here and elsewhere due to the increase in water vapor in the atmosphere. Water vapor is increasing because our planet is heating. Scientists tell us this: “For every degree Celsius in warming, the water-holding capacity of the atmosphere increases by about 7 ... by Staff Writer

Oddly Misguided

Last week’s Express Session at The American Hotel focused on the subject of parking [“Sag Harbor Panel Tackles Parking Problems, Business Impacts at ‘Local Matters’ Discussion,” 27east.com, October 29]. The format called for the audience to ask questions of the panelists, unlike prior Express Sessions, where preprepared subjects were given to the panel by the moderator for comment. About halfway through this meeting, former Mayor Jim LaRocca rose to deliver an off-topic statement critical of the village’s review boards’ conduct regarding the 2 Main Street/7-Eleven properties on West Water Street. Mr. LaRocca suggested that the review boards were working in ... by Staff Writer

Poisoned Dialogue

To John Neely [“Get Facts Right,” Letters, October 23], thank you for your comments. I’ll try to address them briefly. James Comey, John Brennan and James Clapper seriously damaged the United States’ reputation for fairness and justice. They have been exposed for using politically motivated lies to subvert our presidency. There is plenty of evidence to back up my argument. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to convict, due to legal statutes of limitation. Your comments about the affordability of health care, housing, etc. are problems directly attributable to the obscene amounts of money Democrats flooded our economy with during COVID. ... by Staff Writer
