The letter submitted by Stephen Ring regarding the “Jose Reyes” farce, which offers praise to the letter writer and a parallel to “Deep Throat” [“Backroom Deals,” Letters, May 15] only makes this situation more preposterous.
It’s generally understood that Mark Felt, who was “Deep Throat,” broke the law by leaking classified information to journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein during the Watergate scandal. He was a deputy director of the FBI at the time, and the actions he took could have landed him in prison. While he didn’t face legal consequences at the time, his actions were considered a violation of his oath and duty as an FBI agent to protect classified information. He went ahead and leaked the information to benefit the country.
In the case of “Jose Reyes,” it’s generally understood that we’re talking about a former local politician who used a fake name to shade politicians to benefit only himself. There was no legal reason he couldn’t have just used his name and written a Letter to the Editor expressing his point of view.
No one can guess why another man does what he does, but speculation leads one to believe this disingenuous, dishonest and childish game of misrepresentation was made because the former politician’s reputation as a chaos agent makes his own Letters to the Editor of this paper less than credible.
In my opinion, The Southampton Press, a paper I love and support, should just come clean with the identity and end this charade. We all know who it is anyway.

To clarify, The Press does not, in fact, know the identity of the person who was writing letters under the “Jose Reyes” pseudonym — Ed.
