After 41 years at Riverhead Building Supply Steven Florence is retiring. Florence grew up in Sag Harbor and in 1983 started working at what was then Southampton Lumber, after leaving the Air Force. He will now embark on a new chapter filled with relaxation, fishing, boating, and endless adventures.
Hampton Bays School District honored veteran Sal Traversa with a flag raised in his honor on March 22. Traversa is a member of American Legion Post #924 Hampton Bays and still serves the community. The event was attended by many Veterans and elected officials including NYS Senator Anthony Palumbo, Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker, Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore, Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, Councilman Michael Iiselli and Hampton Bays Schools Superintendent Lars Clemensen. After a seven year hiatus of yearly joint meetings the Montauk Point Lions Club hosted the East Hampton Lions Club at a meeting on March 22at Sammy’s Restaurant in Montauk to celebrate 75 years of service by both clubs to the local community. Montauk Lion Tom Dess was the master of ceremonies. He recognized that a joint meeting had not occurred in some time, but that Lions are united in their goal to serve the community with a focus on health and sight. He also acknowledged that it was International Woman’s Month, and recognized Lions at the meeting who have and still serve in the East Hampton Lions Club in leadership positions for over a decade, including Rachel Lys, Kelly White, Amber Talmage, Alice Cooley, and Tina Piette. Included in that recognition was Lisa Valcich, the second woman in the Montauk Club to be admitted since it was chartered 75 years ago. KYRIL BROMLEY
The Southampton Chamber of Commerce hosted its “Ring in Spring” event at the Southampton Publick House on Thursday, March 21, with updates from Southampton Village Mayor Bill Manger, pictured at left, along with Karen Connolly, the chamber’s executive director, are, Besim Cukaj, president of the chamber; Seamus Doyle, a senior vice president with First National Bank of Long Island, which sponsored the event; Don Sullivan, the owner of the Southampton Publick House and chamber vice president; and Gavin Menu, publisher of The Express News Group, including The Southampton Press.
