Dorothy Jones Hedges
Dorothy Jones Hedges of Bridgehampton died on Thursday, September 9. Known to friends and family as “Dotty,” she was 77.
Born June 15, 1933, in Southampton, she was the daughter of Walter and Teresa Jones. After attending Sacred Hearts School, she graduated from Southampton High School, as the salutatorian of the class of 1951, and then briefly worked as a school secretary in Southampton. She spent some time in California, before returning to marry Albert Hedges of Bridgehampton, where they settled.
A devout Catholic, she was a lecturer for many years at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Bridgehampton. Family said she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who expressed her love through cooking. While raising five children, she often baked chocolate chip cookies and donuts from scratch. In addition, her homemade pickles and strawberry jam were always in high demand, family recalled.
She also enjoyed taking her children to Long Beach and, in later years, to Scott Cameron Beach.
As her children grew older, she began working as a secretary at Bridgehampton Schools, where she worked for many years. In her retirement, she often made trips to Florida with her husband. Whenever they were home in Bridgehampton, they could often been seen walking through the village, survivors said.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and James Walker of Southampton, Judy and Joseph Kahl of Pleasantville, New York, and Linda and Randy Newberry of Florida; two sons, Timothy Hedges of Southampton and William Hedges and his wife Eileen of New Jersey; six grandsons, Jason Newberry, Matthew and Daniel Kahl, Jack and William Hedges and Ethan Walker.
She is also survived by three sisters, Agnes Economos of Riverhead, Teresa Rapp of Elma, New York, and Ethel Glinka of California; and two brothers, Louis Jones of New Hampshire and Thomas Jones of California.
Visitation was held on September 13 at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral mass was held on September 14 at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Bridgehampton. Interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C., 20090-6011 would be appreciated by the family.
