Hampton Bays resident Fotine Z. Nicholas died on August 19 at her home. An English teacher in New York City schools for many years, she was 88.
She earned her teaching degree and a master’s degree in English at Hunter College in New York City. During the early 1950s she was chosen to be a Fulbright Scholar and spent a year teaching and studying in Greece. In addition to English, she was also fluent in Greek, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and German.
She and her husband, Leuther “Terry” Nicholas, retired to their Hampton Bays home 10 years ago. In addition to her husband of 54 years, she is survived by a son, Peter Nicholas, and a daughter, Sophia Nicholas-O’Leary, both of Manhattan; and a grandson, Thomas Joseph O’Leary.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays.
