Frank L. Jeffrey of Westhampton Beach died on April 5. He was 91.
Born in Bay Shore in 1919, he graduated from Bay Shore High School, playing as a freshman on the school’s basketball team at the New York State championships.
In 1942, he became a member of the Bay Shore Fire Department’s Engine Company, which was originally formed, according to the family, by his father, Frank A. Jeffrey.
He joined the armed forces and served in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan. Upon his discharge, he married Arlene Grace Rose, also of Bay Shore, and the couple enjoyed 61 years together.
He was employed with the Suffolk County Water Authority before his retirement to Cape Carteret, North Carolina. According to his daughter, Sharon Wittschen, he took up golf for the first time at age 70.
He returned to the East End in 2003.
In addition to his wife, Arlene Grace Rose of Bay Shore, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon Wittschen and her husband John of Westhampton Beach; a son, Robert Jeffrey and his wife Barbara of Vermont; a sister, Lorraine McAndrews of Westhampton Beach; and a granddaughter, Cydney Jeffrey of Vermont.
A grandson, John Timothy Wittschen, predeceased him.
The family received visitors on April 9 at Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. Services were attended by an honor guard from the Bay Shore Fire Department.
Funeral services, officiated by Father Joseph Miro, followed on April 10 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Quiogue. Mr. Jeffrey was cremated; a service will be held at a later date at Calverton National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bay Shore Fire Department, 195 Fifth Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706 would be appreciated by the family.
