Gloria J. Lesemann
Gloria Jackson Lesemann, a longtime resident of Quogue and New York City and, more recently, Westhampton Beach, died at her home on July 2. She was 82.
Ms. Lesemann was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on October 4, 1929, to Florence and Leyman Jackson. She graduated from the University of Indiana at Bloomington with a degree in journalism and English literature. She wrote for various newspapers on the West Coast and the San Francisco Opera before settling in New York City, where she met her husband of 49 years, Robert, at McGraw Hill Publishing. After the births of her three daughters, she continued her career in publishing on a freelance basis into her 60s.
Ms. Lesemann was a fixture within the Quogue summer community for decades, bicycling her editing assignments back and forth to the Surf Club and post office, with her girls in tow on their bikes. A devoted supporter of the Quogue Library and Quogue Wildlife Refuge, a treasured neighbor, a companion to older homebound friends, a constant source of loving advice for younger beachgoers or a literary tidbit for fellow booklovers, she epitomized a bygone, quieter, cozier lifestyle in the Hamptons, survivors said.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Raymond Happy, Martha and Daniel Wickline, Sarah and Robert B. Davis Jr.; and four grandchildren, Haley, Maggie, Blake Davis and Eleanor Happy; and her caregiver of six years, Leila.
A private funeral service was held at St. Mark’s Church in Westhampton Beach. Memorial donations to the Community of the Holy Spirit, NY@CHSSisters.org would be appreciated by the family.
