Harriet Elizabeth (née Sanford) Vail of Southampton died on February 25 at the Hamptons Care Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, just one month shy of her 93rd birthday.
Born March 24, 1916, she was the third child and only daughter of Sarah Elizabeth (née Squires) and Edward L. Sanford. She was raised and lived her entire life, with the exception of the past couple of years, at 37 Post Crossing in Southampton.
A member of the Southampton United Methodist Church for many years, she was a member of the church choir. She worked for the Bulova Watch Company in Sag Harbor and was a trumpeter with the Sag Harbor Community Band.
On September 20, 1953, she married Benjamin Howard Vail of Bridgehampton. In addition to her husband, who died in 2001, she was predeceased by two brothers, Carl and Claude Sanford. She is survived by numerous second-, third- and fourth-generation cousins.
Visitation was held on February 28 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton where a funeral service was conducted by Reverend Koonae Lee, pastor of the Southampton United Methodist Church. Interment followed at the family plot in Southampton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Southampton United Methodist Church would be appreciated by the family.
