Longtime Southampton resident Harriette E. Dukeshire died at home on October 10. She was 87.
Ms. Dukeshire was born in Brooklyn on May 22, 1928, the only child of Marion and Lloyd Dukeshire. The family spent many summers in Southampton and eventually made it their permanent home. For a time Ms. Dukeshire worked as a key punch operator in Manhattan, a job thought at the time to have a long future.
She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton and for many years helped assemble the church bulletins and set up for the annual Christmas luncheons.
Cheerful and good-natured, Ms. Dukeshire was a faithful friend to both people and animals, survivors said. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed eating out, going to the movies and animals. Over the years the family had several parrots and raised parakeets, and at one time she was known as the “bird lady.” Always kind-hearted, she never turned away a stray cat in her later years.
Visiting hours were held at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on October 14, followed by services conducted by the Reverend Richie King. Interment followed at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
