“Nobody wants you here.”

This is what a passerby in an expensive foreign sports car yelled at me while I participated in a demonstration against our current administration’s tactics. For me, that is always a hilarious statement. My roots here in Southampton predate the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the foundation of our republic.

I would bet a good sum that he is a recent city transplant who does not know the difference between a republic and a democracy.

His point of view, one can only guess at, obviously pro-Trump. One set of very wealthy people see him as their totem; if you are wealthy, it is proof you are smarter and better … you earned it. You get to keep every cent you can grab. Ego-bound, they feel no responsibility to others outside their tribe, nor will ever acknowledge that no one makes a fortune alone.

His good fortune rests on a system that is currently under direct attack by the administration: the independent Federal Reserve, our currency system that the administration weakens with bitcoin and irrational tariffs, our courts that should expose and punish corruption in business operations but instead are buried in spurious lawsuits designed to intimidate political opponents.

The person I encountered will never believe there is a problem until it hits his wallet.

Based on happy honking and multiple thumbs up, it appears that many more do want us here. Step up and out, people. Do not be afraid. We had a good functional government until the politicians (mostly Republican) deliberately undermined and changed the rules of operation in the Senate and Congress and stacked the Supreme Court.

We are indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

We are fighting for your republic.
