author on Jul 14, 2016

Jean Schmidt de Loiselle, a longtime resident of Southampton, died on June 6 in West Deptford, New Jersey, with her daughter, Deborah, and son-in-law, Anthony N. Mishik, by her side. She was 85.

Born in Belrose, on September 12, 1930, she was the only child of Edward Schmidt and Phylis Urie. At the early age of six years old, she was enrolled in solo ballets and playing the piano. She skipped kindergarten and eighth grade to attend Garden City High School. After her graduation, Ms. de Loiselle was accepted into the Southampton Nursing Program at Southampton Hospital in 1947 and graduated in 1950. She devoted her life to her nursing career and her family. What she loved the most regarding her nursing career was helping people, dedicating 40 years to nursing.

In addition to nursing, she loved to teach. She taught at the Southampton Nursing School, where she had her special “29” students. As she worked toward a Bachelor of Arts at Southampton University, she worked as an assistant instructor in the Marine Division at Southampton College of Long Island University, in addition to raising a family.

One of her favorite pasttimes was taking her three grandchildren to the Rogers Memorial Library. As well as being an avid reader, her hobbies consisted of doing crossword puzzles, singing, knitting, and sewing beautiful outfits for her grandchildren and her daughter. She loved animals and she was always surprising her grandchildren with a puppy or kitten. She loved the beautiful beaches of Southampton, outdoor swimming, boating with friends, and socializing with friends, plus having all the kids come over. She loved spending time with her daughter’s family and traveling with them from California to Florida and back to the East Coast.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah and husband Anthony; a son, Edward; and three grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael and Christopher.

Memorial donations may be made to Southampton Hospital, southamptonhospital.org.
