Katherine Harrell Flynn died January 19, 2018 in Warminster, Pennsylvania, from a stroke complicated by Parkinson’s Disease. She was 80.
Born July 6, 1937, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, she was the eldest child of Dr. Leon Jackson Harrell and Florence Hooks Harrell. She was a Camp Trailee camper, a graduate of Goldsboro High School, the University of North Carolina Women’s College, and Long Island University in Southampton. After teaching in Virginia Beach and Boston, she married architect Henry Mayo Flynn Jr. and settled in Goldsboro in 1964. Together they had three children, Kit, Henry III, and Harrell. She taught kindergarten at St. Francis Church, and was the director of Christian education at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
In 1983, the Flynns moved to Southampton, where Mr. Flynn established his architecture firm on Main Street. In 1989, at 53 years old, she received her Masters of Science from Long Island University and became a well-regarded kindergarten teacher at Southampton Elementary School where she spent 12 wonderful years. Upon retirement, she and her husband divided their time between Maine and North Carolina.
Ms. Flynn was much loved and admired by her family, her students, her teaching associates, her Girl Scouts and fellow Scout leaders, and the friends she made over the years, survivors said. Her smile, and kind and open demeanor made her a memorable presence. She loved to garden, and would plant daffodils and dogwoods anywhere she thought needed a pop of color. She had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Mayo Flynn Jr., of Warminster; a daughter, Katherine “Kit” Flynn of Maine; two sons, Henry “Hank” Mayo Flynn III (Jennifer) of Pennsylvania, and Harrell McKay Flynn of Pennsylvania; and three grandsons, Henry 4, Daniel and Harrell. She is also survived by a brother, Toby Hooks Harrell (Cheryl) of North Carolina; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Harris Harrell of Georgia; as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Leon Jackson “Jack” Harrell Jr.
A memorial will be held at the family home on Parker Pond in Mount Vernon, Maine, on July 14, 2018.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wayne County Public Library of Goldsboro, N.C., or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
