Kathleen H. Hull

Kathleen H. Hull of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on Sunday, February 5. She was 72.

Kit Kat, as she was affectionately known, was born April 26, 1939, to J. Gerald and Eva Gilmartin Herbert and attended Southampton Public Schools. She graduated from Rosariane Academy of West Palm Beach and Mary Mount College of Virginia. Married to Arthur Hull IV on June 16, 1962, she had five sons, Arthur B. Hull V, James Geoffrey Hull, the late Mark Foster Hull, Timothy Halton Hull, and Terrence Harold Hull.

Ms. Hull was the essence of compassion, duty, style and beauty, survivors said. She loved cooking, cross country skiing, tennis, golf, bridge and long walks on the beach. A devoted wife and mother, she provided her children with a wealth of opportunities in education, sports, travel and appreciation of the arts. While raising her children and running a demanding household, she also had her own bread business and worked in two local family businesses, Hull Chevrolet-Oldsmobile and Herbert’s Market. Ms. Hull was also active in charitable and cultural affairs in the Southampton community. She participated and volunteered for the Southampton Hospital, Sacred Heart Church, the Parrish Art Museum and the Southampton Fresh Air Home.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Arthur B. Hull IV; sons, Arthur of Massachusetts, Geoffrey of Southampton, Timothy of Southampton and Terrence of California; grandchild, Devon Kathleen Hull; siblings, Ann H. Frankenbach and Arthur M. Herbert; daughter-in-law, Geraldine French Hull. In addition to her son, Mark Hull, she was predeceased by two siblings, Eva Jane Nath and J.G. Herbert.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, February 7, at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, February 8, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southampton Fresh Air Home, 36 Barkers Island Road, Southampton, NY 11968, or Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 168 Hill Street Southampton, NY 11968.

The Downtown Dilemma

Last week, an Express Sessions event in Sag Harbor focused on the village’s shopping district and explored a puzzle: If last summer was the busiest ever, and the streets of Sag Harbor were, by all accounts, packed on most every day and evening, why were the owners of shops on Main Street and elsewhere in the business district reporting a down year? The answers are elusive, complicated — and, in many ways, universal to every downtown shopping district on the South Fork, from Montauk to Eastport: Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Water Mill, Amagansett, East Hampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays. ... by Editorial Board
