Jean Cruthers
Jean Cruthers, longtime resident of Southampton, died at the home of Joe and Leeanne Healey of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Saturday, April 16.
Born in Manhattan, Ms. Cruthers was a talented artist and sculptor who studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and participated in the St. John’s Art Show in Southampton. At the age of 16, she began a career in modeling and became one of the top cover girls in the 1940s. She appeared in the movie, “Cover Girl” starring Rita Hayworth in the role of “Lady of Fashion” and in the Cole Porter musical, “Seven Lively Arts.” She owned the Foster-Ferguson Modeling Agency in Manhattan. She was also an avid golfer and attained the honor of women’s club champion for several years at the Leewood Country Club in Eastchester as well as the Southampton Golf Club.
Ms. Cruthers was a parishioner at Our Lady of Poland Church. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her sparkling personality and her kindness to all, survivors said.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Blanche Marrin, Jean Mahoney, Beth DiTolla, Walter Colleran, Glynn Donlon, Maureen Doyle, Patricia Strong, Jack Colleran and Beth DiBenedetto; grand-nieces and grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews; and numerous stepchildren. Ms. Cruthers was predeceased by husbands, Robert Foster, Daniel Lynch and Francis Cruthers; brothers, Walter and John Colleran and a sister, Blanche Healey also of Southampton.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.
