How satisfying it was to listen in on the annual Sustainability Committee’s report to the Town Board! So much breadth and depth in the efforts on both sides. We are a noteworthy community.
The board has demonstrated great leadership in embracing Lynn Arthur’s effort toward a carbon-neutral energy policy. And the committee, with the assistance of Janice Sherer, long-range town planner, is making strong requests to the Town Board highlighting recommended opportunities, including the important completion and adoption of a climate action plan and the inclusion of a sustainability coordinator for the vital work of educating the public.
Kudos to both the Sustainability Committee and our Town Board. Southampton was one of the first communities to become a “bronze”-rated New York Climate Smart Community, and we are working toward “silver.” Let’s keep on going and go for the gold! We, again, can be a light to all municipalities in New York State.
We are in an election year for our town supervisor, Town Board and Trustees. Let’s ask all candidates if they are willing to “go for the gold.” And, candidates, please tell us in letters to the editor and at future debates how you feel about going for the gold!
