Mark Richard Joseph of New York City and Sag Harbor died on December 26. He was 89.
He was born November 8, 1932 to Hyman Jerome and Marian Perlstein Joseph in Bayside, New York. He attended Bayside High School and then Princeton University, graduating in 1954 from the Woodrow Wilson School with a degree in Middle Eastern studies.
After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was active for six years primarily aboard ship as purser and continuing in the Reserves for an additional 22 years from which he retired as captain.
Joseph founded Maran Coal, an international energy company, conducting business around the world until his retirement in 2012. A member of The Friars Club, he also served as vice president of Rodeph Sholom and as Trustee on the Temple’s board of directors for many years.
His family meant more to him than anything in the world, but he also deeply loved his Mets, a long and winding joke, and a good cigar, his family said.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Joseph; his six children, Rebecca Joseph, Jennifer Joseph (Jon Longhi), Margaret Joseph (Daniel Siegel), Sasha Joseph (David Blumsack), Max Joseph (Tracy Sweetbaum Joseph), Sophie Joseph; and his five grandchildren, Katy, Phoebe, Jacob, Cora and Avra.
