Mitchell Mezynieski Jr. of Sag Harbor and formerly of Wainscott died on February 10 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Mezynieski was born on June 24, 1940 in Southampton to Mitchell and Josephine (Case) Mezynieski.
After graduation from East Hampton High school in 1958, Mr. Mezynieski entered the Army National Guard for two years. Upon his return to Wainscott, he worked with his father in the construction business.
Over the years, he built dozens of homes and other buildings on the East End. He also held a Suffolk County Master Plumbers license.
He enjoyed racing cars at the Riverhead Raceway. One day in the early 1980s while walking out to his milk barn with an umbrella, he was struck by lightning, leaving a scar on his heart, but he was otherwise unhurt. One of the last commercial buildings he built in the early 1960s, and still stands unchanged to this day, was the Camel stand on Montauk Highway across from the Bridgehampton Commons.
Mr. Mezynieski could always be seen around Wainscott driving a pickup with his dog Woody inside. In 2015, he retired and moved to his other home next to his daughter in Sag Harbor.
He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Mezynieski.
He is survived by his brother Samuel Mezynieski of Hampton Bays and sister Carolyn Phillips of Springs; his daughter Joanne Backlund and her husband Bruce of Sag Harbor; his son John Mezynieski of Riverhead; his grandson Christopher Backlund of Sag Harbor; his granddaughter Emily Backlund of Sag Harbor; two nephews and a niece.
A memorial service was held on February 13 at the Bridgehampton Firehouse. Interment followed at Wainscott Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Bridgehampton Fire Department and EMS would be appreciated by the family.
