No Justification

Being a 30-year homeowner in East Quogue, I felt it necessary hear firsthand from the proponents their justification for the need to create a village. The answer was the denial of “The Hills at Southampton” golf course development by the Southampton Town Board. The committee members believe that the majority of East Quogue residents approved of The Hills development, and that the Town Board denied East Quogue residents the perks promised by Discovery Land Company, the developer, including a new parking lot for the business district and golf outings for the fire department.

Therefore, we must become a village so we can have “home rule” to prevent this type of action in the future. You never know, they argue, when the town will down-zone sections of the hamlet, or approve an affordable housing project in East Quogue without the consent of residents.

The fact is, there are no plans for down-zoning or affordable housing projects in East Quogue. The fact is, the Town Board voted the development down after a very long and public debate. The fact is that many members of the exploratory committee have ties to the developer; one key presenter admitted being an employee of Discovery. Others were paid consultants — or members of the fire department who want their promised golf outings.

The fact is that taxes will go up for residents of the proposed village. The fact is, there is no real justification for the creation of the village.

Vote no to the incorporation of East Quogue.
