I would like to dispel some rumors that, if elected as mayor of the Village of Southampton, I have a preordained candidate in mind.
If elected, one of my first responsibilities would, in fact, be to fill my open village trustee seat. I take that responsibility seriously, and I would approach that decision democratically, fairly and with an open mind, seeking an individual who would best represent the village.
Here are the principles that would guide my decision:
I will welcome input and recommendations from concerned and involved residents. I will consider individuals with relevant experience and a demonstrated commitment to our community.
I will not appoint any former mayors or trustees, because I am committed to open government and giving new and representative voices a seat at the table. This is an opportunity to bring fresh ideas to the board.
I am looking for someone who can think critically, offer original solutions and work together. I am not looking for a rubber stamp. Our village benefits when leadership is thoughtful, independent and civil.
I understand the importance of open, representative government. That is my commitment to the voters of Southampton Village and, if elected, all of my actions as mayor will reflect a fair process.
