Nordal Mantaras McWethy of Naples, Florida, and Remsenburg died peacefully on January 22, after a long illness. She was 67.
She was born on August 23, 1944, the only child of Jean (nee Fallon) and Charles Mantaras. She resided for most of her youth with her parents at her Aunt Millie’s home on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, next door to her life-long best friend Janet Luhrs, or at her Auntie Ree’s home on Long Island with her McGrath cousins, JeanneMarie, Peggy, and Dolly.
She graduated from Sheepshead Bay High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University. She then forged a 17-year career at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, specializing in cardiac lab technology. During that time, she met the love of her life, James Andrew “Andy” McWethy. On June 23, 1980, they married at his Manhattan home, and this was their primary residence for most of her life. On August 28, 1982, their daughter Andrea Marisa was born.
She was an avid horsewoman, skier, tennis player, and walker. A New Yorker through and through, she was a force to be reckoned with in volunteer associations; she served on the board of the Sand Bar Beach Club, as president of the Gramercy Park Neighborhood Association, and successfully led the restoration of historic lighting to the neighborhood. She was a valued member and past president of the Republican Knickerbocker Club, and a parent leader at her daughter’s school, Marymount.
She loved the South Fork of Long Island, and their second home in Remsenburg was a source of great happiness she shared generously with family and friends.
Most of all, she loved to travel. Over the years, the McWethy Christmas card was an amazing travelogue of all the far-flung places the family experienced. Since retiring, the couple resided in Naples, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, Andy McWethy; her daughter Andrea Hetley and her son-in-law Dr. Richard Hetley; her cousin and his husband Peggy and Donald Bruhn; other close family members, and old and new friends close by and far. She was predeceased by her mother and father.
A Mass of the Faithfully Departed will be said on February 15 at noon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 625 111th Avenue N, Naples, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Matthew’s House, 2601 Airport Road South, Naples, Florida, 34112.
