The Pierson girls cross country team began its postseason run on Friday at the Division IV Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park. And although the race had no effect on whether the team would run at the upcoming county championships, it was a good barometer to see where the girls stood against some of the larger schools in the county.
The Whalers wound up placing third in Division IV, behind Elwood-John Glenn and Mount Sinai, respectively, but ahead of Port Jefferson, Center Moriches, Mattituck, Bayport-Blue Point, Babylon and Southampton. Greylynn Guyer finished fifth in the division in 20:57.30 while Josephine Mott finished ninth in 21:48.60. By finishing in the top 20, both girls earned All-Division honors.
Sara O’Brien (23:00.80) was next in for Pierson, followed by Bennett Greene (23:46.60), Maggie Greenwald (24:17.80), Brianna Torres (24:37.50) and Paige Francis (26:24.80).
The girls will be going for their sixth consecutive Class D county title at the Section XI Championships, otherwise known as the state qualifier, on Wednesday, November 6, back at Sunken Meadow. The boys team is expected to run there as well.
Edmar Nateras-Gonzales finished his boys race in sixth place in 18:06.90 to earn All-Division honors for himself. David Kriegsman was the next Pierson boy to cross the finish line in 19:57.60, followed by Lincoln Fischer (22:24.20), Quincy Renaud (22:55.70) and Ben Kriegsman (24:09.40).
