As a longtime town resident, I have often wondered why we elect someone to head Southampton Town’s Highway Department instead of selecting the person with the best professional qualifications for the job.
I am pleased, therefore, to note that next month we will have the chance to elect Tom Neely, someone with excellent qualifications for the job. As a member and former chair of the town’s Sustainability Committee, I worked with Tom in his position as director of intermodal transportation for the town. He was of great assistance in passing various policies designed to reduce the town’s carbon footprint and transportation expenses. As a former vice president of the Hampton Jitney, his insights and experience both in the industry and town government should translate well into the job of highway superintendent.
Mr. Neely’s opponent is a retired police detective. Even if this position were changed into a professional one, Mr. Neely would be an excellent choice.
