An enthusiastic and well-deserved thank you for the efforts of so many first responders in our community, as well as dozens of communities throughout Suffolk County and beyond, during our recent serious brush fire, scarily reminiscent of our Pine Barrens fire some 30 years ago [“Fast Response Succeeds in Bringing Fast-Moving Westhampton Pines Fire Under Control,” 27east.com, March 12].
I have always appreciated the quiet efficiency of our firefighters here in Quogue from my years as our mayor: Men and women working pro bono so that those of us living here can rest assured that their homes and personal safety will always be protected.
The fact that over 90 communities responded so quickly and efficiently can only enhance our feeling of safety — and for that we should all go out of our way to thank all first responder teams: fire, police, EMTs, ambulance crews, and, of course, our local doctors and nurses, all of whom work tirelessly to keep us out of harm’s way 24/7, and to care for us whenever necessary.
Interestingly, in the autumn of 2023, I added a new first responder focus to our Warriors Rock Veterans Tribute concert at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, and, not surprisingly, it was a big hit to everyone: the community for being given the opportunity to formally thank those very special teams, and the teams themselves, unaccustomed to being so honored.
With a similar concert now scheduled during the upcoming Veterans Day week, Saturday evening, November 15, at the WHBPAC, I am hoping for a similar positive result.
