Sag Harbor native Richard Michael Novatka of West Palm Beach, Florida, died on November 8 when his heart gave out while he was riding his bicycle. He was 59.
Born September 20, 1949, and raised in Sag Harbor, he moved to West Palm Beach in 1992. He worked for AT&T for 18 years and then for Southern Bell for 12 years, retiring in 2006.
Survivors recall him as a fun-loving person with a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh, adding that one could not help but want to be in his company. In his later years he became dedicated to the cause of helping others turn their lives around one day at a time. According to survivors, his strength and commitment inspired many who considered him their hero.
He is survived by three sons, Richard Michael Novatka Jr. of the Dominician Republic, Charles David Novatka of Astoria and Kasey Adam Novatka of New Paltz; two daughters, Nola-Marie Novatka and Jodi Elisabeth Novatka, both of North Carolina; three brothers, Jack Novatka, Mark Novatka and Michael Novatka, all of Florida; two grandsons, Jayden Marques and Quince A. Syon; a granddaughter, Zaiya Marie; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his fiancée, Deb McClosky of Florida, her two daughters, Melissa and Angela, and her two grandchildren, Reese and Olivia.
Visitation and funeral services were held on November 12 at Howard-Price Funeral Home in North Palm Beach. Cremation followed.
A local memorial service will be held in spring 2009 at St. Andrew’s Church in Sag Harbor. Details will be announced in a future edition of The Press.
