Richard M. Waterman, who was a part of the Southampton community for more than 50 years, died on February 18, 2017. He was 90.
Mr. Waterman attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, served in World War II, and became president and CEO of Levitt & Sons, once the largest homebuilders in the United States.
Mr. Waterman acted as a spokesperson for the industry and an advisor to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, testifying before Congress and speaking around the country. He was a co-founder of the Council of Housing Producers, an organization of the country’s largest homebuilders.
For more than 20 years Mr. Waterman served as a trustee and mentor for the Children’s Aid Society, heading its real estate committee. He was recognized as a Platinum Life Member and honored for his contribution and dedication to the organization.
He traveled and excelled at tennis, golf and watersports.
Throughout his life, he touched an untold number of people with his humor, warmth and compassion. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, friend and mentor, survivors said.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lis; four children; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be private.
